Tuskegee wins 20th straight

by Defender Staff Report

Make it 20 victories in a row for Tuskegee.

The Golden Tigers remained the top-ranked Black college football team in the nation, topping Fort Valley State, 20-16 in a Southern Intercollegiate Conference clash.

The win improved Tuskegee’s record to 4-0 overall.

Although the 20 points were the lowest total in their last 16 games, Tuskegee head coach Willie Slater was still pleased with the win.

“As long as we’re winning, I’m okay,” Slater said. “We had 300-and-something yards of total offense, and I guess that looks bad when you’ve been gaining 600 all season. However, we did what we needed to do. I’m not worried about scoring 50 points.”

Quarterback Zackary Atkinson had a rare off game for Tuskegee, throwing for just 125 yards and getting intercepted three times in the contest. However, he did rush for a touchdown.

The loss dropped Fort Valley State to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC.

“They’re a good team,” Slate stated. “They were very prepared and looked like a team that had scouted us well.”

Tuskegee will battle Alabama A&M Saturday at the 25th Anniversary of the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis.

Kickoff for the contest at brand new Lucas Oil Stadium is at 3 p.m.

According to William Mays, co-chairman of the Classic, at least 50,000 fans are expected to attend the event.
