1. I thought the Defender had gone out of business. Where did your company go?
We moved, but the Defender newspaper is still up and running. As of Tuesday, May 26, we have moved from the Chicago Loop at 200 S. Michigan to Bronzeville at 4445 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
2. I can't find a location by me that sells the Defender newspaper. Where should I look?

3. My office would like to subscribe to the Defender. How do we go about doing so?

4. I'm having trouble viewing the website since it's been upgraded. How can I see your site?

5. I'd like to place a Classified Ad online or in your newspaper. How do I go about doing so?
Please contact our Classifieds department if you want an ad that goes online and in the paper. If you are solely looking to place a Classified Ad online, visit the Classifieds section and select "Place an Ad."
6. I'd like to place an advertisement online or in your newspaper. How do I go about doing so?
Please contact our Advertisement department. They will be able to assist you with ads online and in our print newspaper.
7. I would like to submit my article or press release to your newspaper as a freelancer. How do I go about doing so?
Please contact Lou Ransom, our Executive Editor, with your query letter and credentials. You can also write blogs by registering as a member through our site. Press releases may be faxed to 312.225.9231 or emailed to editorial@chicagodefender.com.
8. I want to submit an event to your Events Calendar, but I don't see an option to do so. How do I go about doing so?
In order to add your event to our website, you must be a registered member on our website. After registering for your free account, please click the “Events Calendar” title in the center bottom area of our homepage. The next screen will have an option to “Submit Your Event.” Click the “Editor” button on the right-hand side above the text box, and fill in all necessary information. If you have photos or .jpeg flyer images to attach to the event, upload in the “Photo” area. After you have finished, select “Submit.” The turnaround time for approval is usually 24 hours.
9. I'd like to start creating a blog. How do I set one up with your site?
Register with our website for a free account, and you are automatically eligible to start your blogs immediately.
10. I am looking for an article that I can't find on your website. How do I go about doing so?
The Chicago Defender website was created in January 2008, so any articles before 2008 would either have to be ordered by purchasing a previous copy of our newspaper or by using the Archives link. If the article you're looking for was printed between January 1, 1905 and December 31, 1975, contact our Archives representative. If the article you're looking for came out between 1976 and 2007, please contact our Circulation department to order back copies. If the article you're looking for came out in 2008, contact our Web Editor to help you find the article or contact the Circulation department to order a back copy.
11. I would like to write a Letter to the Editor. How do I go about doing so?

12. Can I buy an individual copy of the Defender online (ex. Presidential Election 2008 edition)?
Our site is not currently set up to buy individual copies. You can, however, subscribe to the digital edition for $10 annually in order to get the current edition quickly by clicking on the "CDO Digital button" that looks like this (middle, right-hand side of page):
The digital edition does archive past editions so you may find the article you're looking for this way too. If/when collector's issues are available to purchase online, an alert will be added to our homepage. Please contact the Circulation department for any past copies you'd like to order from 2008 or visit our Archives link for older issues.
13. I cannot successfully log into the digital edition. Why not?
In order to log into the digital edition, you must first pay the $10 annual subscription and register an account. If you'd like to read the digital edition, please click on the "Digital Edition" towards the bottom, right-hand side, not the Member Log-In because they give you two different types of access. The purpose of the Member Log-In is to leave article comments, write blogs, and set up a profile. If you are trying to use the same email address and user ID for the digital edition as you have for the Member Log-In registration, the website will say that there is already someone with this user ID. Please choose a different user ID and email address. (Note: For those who were digital subscribers before they were member subscribers, the user ID and email address will work for both, but not vice versa.) If you still are unable to access the digital edition, please contact our Web Editor.
14. Why am I able to read some articles in full and have to pay for a digital or print subscription for other articles?
Daily web stories are printed in full, but the articles that are printed in our weekly print edition online are the only articles that you must pay to read in full.
15. I'd like my book reviewed in your Book Review section online. How do you accept material?
Please send a query letter about your title and the first chapter of the book via email in Word or PDF format to the Web Editor. If the book is accepted for a review, the assigned reviewer will reply within 14 days requesting a print copy. No e-books will be accepted. Please give the reviewer 60 days to review your title.
