Students earn $157 million in college scholarships

Chicago Public Schools' graduating class last spring collected nearly $157 million in college scholarships.

Officials said Wednesday that is nearly twice the $82 million earned the year before and a district record.

Speaking at a high school on the city's South Side, Mayor Richard Daley said this year's haul is more than 10 times the amount that graduates earned in 2004, the first year school officials began tracking the scholarship money. Daley said at that point, students earned $14 million.

Daley pointed out that the students worked hard to earn every penny of the scholarships. He said that was good news not only for Chicago's public schools but also for the nation. He added education is the answer to all the nation's social ills.  AP
