BMOA partners with Football Classic in sponsoring HBCU College Fair

by Theresa Fambro Hooks

An integral part of the 2008 Chicago Football Classic on Sept. 6 at Soldier Field will be the 2nd annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair sponsored by Black McDonald's Owners & Operations Association.

Representatives from a number of HBCUs, such as Tuskegee Institute, Dillard University, Fisk University, Alcorn State University and Lincoln University, will be on hand in the Cadillac Room of Soldier Field from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., to talk with Chicago Public Schools students about college before they become high school seniors.

The fair will include several workshops, including Financing Your Education, The Application Process, Knowing NCAA Requirements: Rules and Restrictions for Student Athletes, and new this year, Real Life Experiences conducted by recent college graduates. Participating students will also have an opportunity to qualify for the many available college scholarships.

The first 1,500 CPS high school students will receive a free ticket to the game and concert. All non-CPS students will receive $5 off the purchase price of a ticket. Each ticket will include the Greek Step Show, Battle of the Bands (high schools and colleges participating) half-time show and the concert, featuring J. Holiday.

BMOA’s partnership with the Chicago Football Classic is “a perfect fit,” said Melvin Buckley Jr., one of 19 BMOA board members and entrepreneurs who own/operate McDonald restaurants in Chicago, the surrounding suburbs and in Northern Indiana.

“The Classic, like BMOA, supports education and knowledge, which we know is extremely important for our young people in order for them to make a difference in their community,” Buckley said.

HBCU Representatives should also set-up Committees in Chicago where African American students can ask questions and receive advice as it relates to HBCU's throughout the School year. One day is good, but to really scratch the surface -- HBCU's are going to have to set-up Offices in Major Cities, Counties, and Districts!
