U.N. says two dead on overturned Haitian bus

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti–A U.N. official says two babies were killed when a bus overturned in a rain-swollen river in Haiti. He denies reports of a higher death toll in the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Fay.

U.N. police spokesman Fred Blaise says peacekeepers saw the bodies of two infants who drowned in the the Riviere Glace. Blaise tells The Associated Press that the peackeepers also found the body of a man who drowned in the river but was not on the bus.

He said Monday that 41 people escaped the bus. Silvera Guillaume, the coordinator for Haiti’s civil protection department in the area, had earlier said at least 30 passengers were feared dead in Sunday’s accident. Fay caused at least eight deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic before passing over Cuba and heading toward Florida.
