Union leaders say they are willing to do their part in helping to solve the city of Chicago's budget deficit but only after Mayor Richard Daley gives details on how many union jobs will be saved.
Daley has ordered the city's non-union employees to take unpaid furlough days and canceled pay raises. He also offered incentives to encourage resignations.
The measures will save roughly $9.3 million, barely making an impact on the city's estimated $400 million revenue shortfall.
Chicago Federation of Labor President Dennis Gannon said Wednesday that leaders of unions representing city employees will talk about the possibility of matching the unpaid furlough days and canceled pay raises affecting the city's non-union employees.
But Gannon said the unions will need a better understanding of the city's financial condition before they consider doing anything. (AP)
