The Village of Maywood, in collaboration with Cong. Danny K. Davis (D-7th), will pay tribute to legendary John Marshall high school girl’s basketball coach, Dorothy Gaters, on Monday.
The winningest high school basketball coach in state history, Gaters will be honored at the Maywood Park Basketball Court located at 3rd Avenue and Fred Hampton Way in Maywood. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m.
Gaters, known as the queen of girl’s basketball, created the program at Marshall in 1974 and since then has won 829 games—more than any other coach, boys or girls, in Illinois history. Gaters captured her eighth state title when her Lady Commandos won the Class 3-A title in March in downstate Normal.
At Marshall, Gaters has produced 17 high school All-Americans and three Ms. Illinois Basketball Players of the Year.
Davis called her “not only a great coach, but an educator with a comprehensive approach to education.”
“Her players not only learn to win basketball games but how best to approach the game of life.”
“That is a testimony to the greatness of Dorothy Gaters,” Davis said.
“We in Maywood are proud to call Dorothy Gaters ours and look forward to honoring her on Monday night,” Maywood Mayor Henderson Yarbrough Sr. said.
Gaters has been a resident of the west suburb for a number of years.
“She has provided positive experiences and greater self-esteem to thousands of high school girls in her 34 years of coaching. We are truly grateful for her accomplishments,” Yarbrough said.
