Another round in airport expansion fight

A court hearing that got underway Monday could lead to the demolition of more than 500 homes in the proposed path of a new southern runway for O'Hare.
DuPage Circuit Judge Kenneth Popejoy approved a temporary restraining order last July halting Chicago's plans to demolish the homes. The judge ordered a study of the possible release of hazardous materials during the demolition of vacant buildings.
Chicago's attorney, Robert Graham, said Monday the study found nothing to stop the demolition from going forward. But Joseph Karaganis, who represents Bensenville, criticized the study as not wide-ranging enough to protect against carcinogens.
Chicago wants the temporary restraining order lifted. Bensenville attorneys are seeking to make the order against demolition permanent. (AP)
