Report: Chicago, Los Angeles among most corrupt

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — No place in the nation has been more mired in public corruption than Chicago.

That's the finding of a report released Wednesday by researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

It cites federal data showing there were 1,531 convictions for public corruption between 1976 to 2010 in the federal district dominated by Chicago.

Coming in second was the Central District of California, where Los Angeles is located. It had 1,275 convictions during the 34-year period.

The Southern District of New York was third with 1,202 convictions.

The new report says no state has more corruption convictions per capita than Louisiana, followed by Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania.

Report co-author Dick Simpson says the figures confirm Illinois' reputation for corruption is well-deserved.
