Off-duty Chicago police officer shot, killed

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities in Chicago say the off-duty police officer fatally shot on the city's West Side was a 41-year-old man worked as a tactical officer.

Police officials say Clifton Lewis was shot during a robbery Thursday night while working as a security guard at a Chicago grocery store. The 8-year police department veteran was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

Authorities say armed suspects came into the store to rob it, and a suspect fired several shots, hitting the officer.

Investigators on Friday were still looking for the suspects. No arrests have been made.

In a statement, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy offered condolences to the officer's family and friends.
