The Philadelphia Tribune, the nation's oldest, continually publishing Black-owned newspaper since 1884, netted nine awards, including five first place awards, plus the John B. Russwurm Trophy that is given to the newspaper receiving the most points in all merit awards categories. The Tribune won top honors in Best Editorial, Best Special Edition, Best Youth, Best Original Advertising and Best Business Section categories.
The newspapers--all from among the 200-plus NNPA membership--were recognized for their excellence in 21 categories. Ernie Pitt, publisher of the Winston-Salem Chronicle, won one of the highest honors of the evening Publisher of the Year. Other big winners who won multiple awards, included the Los Angeles Sentinel, the Los Angeles Wave, and the New Pittsburgh Courier, sister paper of the Chicago Defender, which won six awards including First Place in Best Women's Section. The Michigan FrontPage, another Real Times Inc. newspaper, won Third Place for Best Feature Story.
