CHICAGO (AP) — Four men who say they were tortured
by Chicago police decades ago will speak about their experiences and about the
effort to create a memorial to torture victims.
The round table is Saturday at Northeastern
Illinois University.
David Bates, Darrell Cannon, Mark Clements and
Anthony Holmes are scheduled to speak.
All four served years in prison after they say
Chicago police, including former Lt. Jon Burge or his men, tortured them into
giving false confessions.
Burge was convicted of perjury and obstruction of
justice last year for lying about the torture of suspects.
Holmes testified at Burge's trial that he still has
nightmares about being shocked and suffocated by police in 1973.
The Chicago Torture Justice Memorials Project is an
effort to create a monument to recognize victims.
