Chicago man charged in shooting of pregnant teen

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities in Chicago have charged an 18-year-old man in the fatal shooting of a pregnant teenager whose baby was saved by doctors.

Police officials say prosecutors have charged Timothy Jones with first-degree murder in the Aug. 16 shooting of 17-year-old Charinez Jefferson. Jones was scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Authorities say Jefferson was walking with friends in Chicago's Marquette Park neighborhood when a man ran toward the group and began shooting. She suffered multiple wounds to the body and one shot to her head.

Authorities say Jefferson was later pronounced dead at a hospital, but doctors saved her baby boy, who remains in critical condition.

Nobody else was hurt in the shooting.
