IL Gov. Quinn stands with Obama in fight over debt

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says a national default would be "cataclysmic" for the country and the state.

The Chicago Democrat said Tuesday the state gets federal money for programs and anything causing that to dry up would be "Armageddon."

Quinn says he's behind Obama's efforts to resolve the debt situation. There's an Aug. 2 deadline to increase the government's borrowing limit. Obama and Washington lawmakers are gridlocked over a deal.

Quinn says Obama can't allow a "group of extremists in the U.S. House of Representatives" to take the economy down a road of recession and unemployment.

He says a group of governors have talked with the White House about standing strong with Obama, who was a U.S. senator from Illinois before he became president.
