Chicago to deploy more police officers to streets

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago city officials say more police officers will be redeployed to the streets as part of a safety improvement effort.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy say 92 officers will be shifted from administrative positions, including from City Hall, to police beats.

Of the officers, 53 have graduated from the Chicago Police Academy. They'll be deployed to several neighborhoods this week.

Emanuel has said that 500 total police officers would be redeployed to police beats. Last month, he said 150 officers were shifted to police beats.

Chicago police say more cops on the streets means building better relationships.
