Andre Watts will join Christoph Eschenbach and Lang Lang, all internationally acclaimed musicians, for July 7 and 8 performances at Ravinia.
Watts is
an instructor at Indiana University School of Music. Eschenbach is currently
the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Kennedy Center;
while Lang Lang, the youngest of the three pianists, tours the world as a
concert artist. July 8, Watts will perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in the
program entitled Right of Spring with compositions of Liszt’s Un Sospiro (A
Sigh), Transcendental Etude No. 10, Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and
Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The day before, Eschenbach will conduct the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, featuring Lang Lang, in a concert entitled Liszt
& Friends and perform Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert will
also feature Chopin’s Andante Spianto in G Major, Grande Polonaise in E-flat
Major and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
RAMSEY
LEWIS AND TRIO on July 10 at 7 p.m. will join Pink Martin in an exceptional
jazz concert. Lewis recently featured the premiere of his Abraham
Lincoln-inspired, Ravinia-commissioned 2009 work Proclamation of Hope and will
present his Newest composition, Colors: the Ecology of Oneness. Pink Martini
who has blended classical, jazz and pop was exceptional with his Hang on Little
Tomato and will perform Splendor in the Grass.
MUNTU
DANCE THEATRE presents United We Drum on July 10 at 3 p.m. in Midway Plaisance.
Admission is free. In addition to Muntu drummers, Native Americans, Japanese,
Indians and Cubans will share rhythms.
WEST
INDIAN OLK DANCE COMPANY HOSTS ITS 1st Annual Caribbean American Heritage Month
gala at Best Western Hillside Hotel, 4400 Frontage Road, in Hillside. The July
18 event is from 6 p.m.-midnight. Admission is $60 per individual and $100 per
coulple. With a theme of Caribbean Women in Dance, the gala will feature dance
styles of St. Lucia, Puerto Rico and Brazil, and include a Caribbean drum
circle and children's dance class.
ADLER
PLANETARIUM invites visitors to experience Journey to the Stars, the life and
death of the stars in the sky. The stars explode into supernovas across the
universe, creating bursts of radiation that can outshine entire galaxies.
Narration is by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg. The planetarium
is located at 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive.
WHALES:
GIANTS OF THE DEEP can be explored through a unique blend of science and
storytelling at the Field Museum, 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive.
