CHICAGO (AP) — The board that governs Chicago Public Schools has voted unanimously to
take back the 4 percent raises promised to teachers in their last
contract.
The board's vote Wednesday means the Chicago Teachers Union has until Monday to decide whether to accept the move or ask that contract negotiations be reopened.
The 4 percent salary increases were part of a contract negotiated in 2007 under former CEO Arne Duncan. New CEO Jean-Claude Brizard didn't make a recommendation on the issue and said he'd support the board's decision.
In taking the vote, the board said the district is facing a more than $700 million budget deficit and can't afford the raises.
The average teacher salary in Chicago is about $69,000.
