High
school athletes from schools all over the city gathered June 1 at the Hyatt
Regency Chicago hotel to be recognized for their outstanding athletic
performances this 2010-11 season.
The 11th
annual Dinner of Champions, hosted by the Chicago Public League, honored all of
its Chicago public school sports city champs and coaches at the awards ceremony
and banquet.
Among the
honorees for the night were three CPS and Public League champions, Gwendolyn
Brooks College Prep boy’s basketball team, Morgan Park High School’s bowling
team, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s large cheer team, and Simeon Career
Academy’s boy’s basketball team – which won the state championship in March.
Recognition
was also given to Lane Tech High School for an impressive high-ranking season.
Lane Tech was awarded school of the year, gaining 10 city championships
altogether.
Also
honored were Raena Rhone of Whitney Young who took home female athlete of the
year in recognition of her 400-meter city and state championship title and
Dontrelle Rush of Harlan Career Academy high school who took home male athlete
of the year for his baseball city and all-state left fielder title.
Coaches
were honored as well, for their contributions to a successful season for CPS
student athletes. Whitney Young cheer coach, Artrice Kelly, received female
coach of the year while Lane Tech softball coach, George Stavrakas, and Lane
Tech swimming coach, Paul Rummlehoff, each received male coach of the year.
