Body in morgue identified after more than a year

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — A 15-month search for a missing Chicago woman ended a few miles from her home at the county morgue where her body has been held for more than a year.

The Chicago Tribune reports the identification of Carmelita Johnson's remains were made after her family provided her dental records last week to a detective.

Those records — which Johnson's daughter Leslie Jackson says were needed because the body was so badly decomposed it couldn't be identified through DNA — end the mystery of remains found on a beach on the city's South Side last April.

But Jackson says she's angry because she believes the police dragged its feet. Police say they did what they could to find Johnson.

The medical examiner's office says a cause of death hasn't been determined.
