CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is temporarily redeploying 500 police officers to the city's highest-crime neighborhoods.
Emanuel says Tuesday's announcement is a "down
payment" on his promise to add 1,000 officers to the beat.
He says the city can't beat crime without more
officers on the street.
The 500 officers will start their new assignments
as early as Thursday. All of them will be on the beat by Sunday.
They'll come primarily from the police department's
Mobile Strike Force and Targeted Response Unit.
