OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — An Alameda County jury soon could begin deliberating the fate of a former Oakland community group leader accused of ordering the killings of three men, including a local journalist.
Closing arguments are expected to wrap up Monday in
the trial of former Your Black Muslim Bakery head Yusuf Bey IV and co-defendant
Antoine Mackey.
Prosecutors say Bey thought he was above the law
when he ordered the death of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey to stop an
investigative story about the once-influential bakery.
They say Mackey was one of Bey's foot soldiers who helped
carry out the killings.
Defense attorneys have spent much of their time
attacking the credibility of the prosecution's key witness, Devaughndre
Broussard, another bakery associate who admitted gunning down Bailey. They say
he lied on the stand to secure his plea deal.
