Chicago archdiocese reinstates suspended priest

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — The Archdiocese of Chicago has reinstated the priestly duties of the Rev. Michael Pfleger, the outspoken pastor suspended last month due to a disagreement over a proposed transfer from his South Side church.

Pfleger was suspended after remarking during an NPR radio interview he would leave the church rather than be removed from St. Sabina Church, which he has headed for more than 30 years.

In suspending Pfleger, Cardinal Francis George said if that was his attitude, he had already left the Catholic Church and therefore "not able to pastor a Catholic parish."

In a statement released Friday, Pfleger said it was not his intention to threaten to leave the priesthood. He added he was sorry for the remark and was committed to working with George to spread the Gospel.
