This month marks 106 years the Chicago Defender has delivered the news and today is a defining moment in history.
The
“Defender Reports” is the first time the Chicago Defender news you enjoy weekly
in print and daily online is now available on television.
The
half-hour weekly show debuted May 12 at 7 a.m. on Cable 25 on Comcast with host
Lou Ransom, Defender Executive Editor and correspondent Kathy Chaney, Defender
Web Editor. “Defender Reports” airs on Thursdays at 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.,
Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and Sundays at 5:30 p.m.
“The
debut of the “Defender Reports” on Cable 25 is another milestone in the
continuing growth of the Chicago Defender newspaper’s history in Chicago and
throughout the U.S. the program will provide another opportunity to cover
issues of importance to the large African American population in Chicago. We

President/Publisher of the Chicago Defender.
On May 5,
1905 in Chicago, Robert S. Abbott printed the first copies of the Chicago
Defender. His goal was to show different aspects of African American life that
mainstream papers didn’t cover.
The
newspaper was a catalyst for what is known as the Great Migration from the
South. Between 1916 and 1970 over 7 million Blacks left the South and relocated
in the North. During that period, the Black population grew in Chicago from 2
percent to 33 percent.
Many came
as a direct result of what they learned by reading the Chicago Defender.
“I’m
excited to see the Defender newspaper expand its reach beyond the city and I’m
glad to be a partner on the program,” said Lorraine Render, senior producer of
Cable 25.

is an award-winning cable channel administered by the City of Chicago. It produces shows
highlighting local interests and businesses.
