State agency launches 5-year breast-feeding plan

Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Department of Human Services has announced a five-year plan to make it easier for new mothers to breast-feed.

It's called the Illinois Breast-feeding Blueprint. To implement it, the state agency is joining forces with the University of Illinois at Chicago's public health school and the nonprofit group Health Connect One.

The groups note that every year in Illinois, nearly one in four mothers never breast-feed their babies.

Their work will focus on creating more supportive environments for breast-feeding, including on the job and in communities and hospitals.

They hope to make breast-feeding a social and cultural norm, especially among women where rates are low, including low-income mothers.
