CHICAGO (AP) — Sexual problems after cancer are often discussed with male patients but less commonly with women survivors.
A University of Chicago program aims to change
that.
The university's PRISM clinic is one of the few
nationwide focusing on women's cancer-related sexual problems.
Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau directs the program and is
working with other centers on generating evidence on the best treatments. Some
problems are common in women who survive breast cancer or gynecologic cancers.
Lindau's research shows many of these women want medical help but don't get it.
Treatment at the Chicago clinic starts with a
counseling visit where causes of women's symptoms are discussed. That's
followed by a physical exam, and sometimes physical therapy, psychotherapy and
couples therapy.
Lindau is working with other specialists to develop
similar programs elsewhere.
