SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — State statistics show that black teenagers in Illinois are more likely to be without a job.
The State Journal-Register in Springfield reports
that state unemployment statistics show the unemployment rate for white youths
is 24.7 percent but it's nearly double for black teenagers at 47.7.
The statistics also show that 11.7 of black
teenagers are employed. The rate is 30 percent for white teenagers and 26
percent for Hispanic teenagers.
Illinois Department of Employment Security
spokesman Greg Rivara says the state's teen unemployment rates mirror the
national situation.
Rivara says the nation's overall unemployment
troubles are making it difficult for teens to find jobs. He says adults are
accepting and looking for jobs that they wouldn't normally if economic times
were better.
