Ill. House OKs year-round class for select schools

Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Some troubled schools in the Chicago-area could offer classes year-round under legislation moving through the General Assembly.

The measure applies to more than 20 schools in Chicago and its suburbs. To qualify, schools must be on the academic watch list for two years. They'll also have to wait until current teacher contracts expire.

Under this possible schedule, schools would offer 215 days of class, up from 180 now.

Democratic Rep. Thaddeus Jones says this will help schools improve to meet federal education benchmarks.

The bill passed 113-0 Tuesday in the House. It now heads to the Senate.
