Stressing the importance of recognizing Black History all year long, the Women of Wisdom held its annual “The Parade of Black Heroism” event Saturday at the Carter G. Woodson Regional Library on the South Side.
The non-profit organization, led by Dorothy D. Lyles, a former
librarian at Woodson, was founded in 2003 to promote education and build
relationships between the youth and seniors.
Lyles and 11 colleagues wanted to find a way to promote
self-esteem, pride and heritage in youths.
The celebration showcased speakers and children dressed up as
their favorite civil rights heroes, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. and Rosa Parks. Chicago Bull Derrick Rose was also portrayed.
