CHICAGO (AP) — A sentence of three months in detention has been handed a 13-year-old Chicago boy accused of throwing a caustic substance at two younger children.
In his appearance Wednesday before Cook County Juvenile Court Judge Colleen Sheehan, the boy apologized.
Noting the boy pleaded guilty to "a felony crime," Sheehan ordered he be held in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center until July for the Aug. 24 attack.
The boy, unnamed because he is a juvenile, was standing on a porch when he threw drain cleaner containing sulfuric acid at his 11- and 10-year-old neighbors.
The children's heads and arms were scarred permanently. Both need ongoing medical treatment.
Although a defense attorney asked for probation, Sheehan said it was in society's interests to lock the boy up.
