CHICAGO (AP) — Wal-mart has announced plans to open six new stores in Chicago by 2013.
The stores are expected to create nearly 1,000 permanent jobs and 200 construction jobs.
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says the stores will bring fresh food and groceries to some of the city's most underserved neighborhoods.
The world's largest retailer announced plans last year to open several dozen stores across the city in a five-year plan called "Chicago Community Investment Partnership." The goal is to create 12,000 jobs and generate $500 million in tax revenue.
The first Wal-mart that opened in Chicago in 2006 was fought by labor who claimed unfair wages.
Labor leaders dropped their opposition last year when Wal-Mart Stores Inc. agreed to pay starting wages above the state's minimum wage.
