CHICAGO (AP) — Officials at Cook County Jail say they're beefing up security with cutting-edge technology.
The correctional facility has unveiled high-tech
body scanners that can show items as small as 0.2 inches.
They're called RadPRO SecurPASS machines.
Officials with the Cook County Sheriff's Office say
a seven-second scan can show if inmates are hiding drugs, weapons or other
contraband in their clothing, hair or body.
The machines don't show anatomical outlines or
facial features.
Four of them are in operation at the jail. They're
in the men's receiving room, women's receiving room and two maximum security
buildings.
Officials say Cook County Jail, which houses up to
10,000 inmates daily, is the biggest single-site county jail in the nation.
