CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police say the crime rate has fallen for the 26th straight month, but that the number of homicides for the first two months of the year is higher than during the same period in 2010.
The department is releasing preliminary statistics for February that show the violent crime fell 9.1 percent and property crime dropped 9.5 percent compared to February of last year.
But the number of homicides for the year was 52 for the first two months of the year, eight more than were reported the first two months of last year.
The one crime that continues to climb is auto theft, with the department reporting an increase of nearly 20 percent compared to last February.
