‘Code’ does good job at capturing Chicago

by Kathy Chaney
When I heard that there would be a “The Chicago Code,” a drama loosely based on the local police department and city government, I was cautiously optimistic about the realism the show would convey.

Shawn Ryan, creator of the show and also of “The Shield,” didn’t disappoint.

Well, let me sort of take that back…a small part in the opening scene was in no way believable. Let me tell you, if a car chase scene really would’ve gone down like that, an e-mail indicating the “Independent Police Review Authority is investigating” would’ve been in my e-mail inbox.

The rest of the episode I found myself chuckling at several scenes that felt like I’ve actually written about.

As a Chicago-born reporter who has covered crime and politics, I’ve seen it all and nothing surprises me.

I got a chance to ask Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis a few weeks ago if he’s seen the pilot and thought Jennifer Beals (Supt. Teresa Colvin) was a fair depiction of him as the top cop.

Weis said he’s only seen the trailer.

Let me know your thoughts about the show once you’ve seen it. I’ve asked Weis to do the same.
